Five Romantic Getaways You Can Take Without Leaving The House
By Rosanna Leo
People read romance novels for many reasons, including the escape factor, the heroic characters and the happy endings. I also enjoy them for their colorful settings. Sunny beaches, where the air smells like cocoa butter. Bustling cities, full of museums and theaters. Cozy villages, where everyone knows everyone else.
I’ve been inspired by many such novels, stories that spark the senses and help you envision their unique settings. Romance novels allow me to visit all these locations without ever leaving my home, and in some cases, they have prompted me to reach for some travel brochures.
I would hazard a guess that Scotland has seen a significant increase in tourism since Outlander exploded onto the scene. In fact, I’d be willing to bet a number of readers have grazed against some standing stones while there. I think it’s safe to say Scotland is as much a character in Diana Gabaldon’s series as Jamie Fraser is.
I guess you could call it Romance Tourism. In other words, books that make you want to catch the next flight. When I choose my next romance read, I often consider the setting. If a book is set in a place I’ve never visited, I’m usually interested. After all, I want to be swept away. Through that book, I want to meet new people, taste new foods and hear the poignant strains of unfamiliar music. I want to be seduced, not only by the protagonist, but by the location.
Here are some romance novel recommendations that will make you want to call your travel agent!
Farrah Rochon’s Bayou Dreams series is set in the small town of Gauthier, Louisiana. This is one series that makes me long for sultry days and even hotter nights. Make sure you check out Yours Forever!
Jessica Cale’s Southwark Saga is set in Post-Fire London and they are my “go to” historical romances. In fact, I brought Tyburn with me on my last trip to London! Jessica’s gritty descriptions of life in Southwark gave me a fresh perspective as I traveled the ancient streets of the city.
In Three Months to Forever, Hudson Lin has whisked us away to exciting Hong Kong. Her characters not only discover new love, they experience the cuisine and culture of this vibrant city.
Brynn Kelly and her hunky French Foreign Legionnaire hero take us on a thrilling adventure in the wilds of New Zealand. Pack light for Forbidden River because adrenaline is the order of the day!
Featuring a crumbling villa and a sexy Italian hero, Karina Halle’s Racing the Sun lures us to sun-drenched Capri. I don’t know about you, but I’ve already made a reservation.
